FAFSA Deadlines:
Submit 2006-2007 FAFSA on the Web Applications by midnight Central Daylight time, July 2, 2007.
Submit 2007-2008 FAFSA on the Web Applications by midnight Central Daylight time, June 30, 2008.
State deadlines are normally much earlier than Federal deadlines. To find your state's deadline, select state deadlines.
Federal Pell Grant ? A Federal Pell Grant does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded usually only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or a professional degree. (In some cases, however, a student enrolled in a post-baccalaureate teacher certification program might receive a Pell Grant.)
Pell Grants are considered a foundation of federal financial aid, to which aid from other federal and nonfederal sources might be added.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) - This Federal program is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. Pell Grant recipients with the lowest EFCs will be considered first for a FSEOG. The FSEOG does not have to be repaid
Academic Competitiveness Grant
An Academic Competitiveness Grant provides up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and who have successfully completed a rigorous high school program. Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. The Academic Competitiveness Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
NATIONAL SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS ACCESS TO RETAIN TALENT GRANT OR NATIONAL SMART GRANT
A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S. citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security.
The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
Federal Perkins Loans
These loans are made through participating schools to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who demonstrate the greatest financial need (Federal Pell Grant recipients get top priority).
Students can be enrolled full or part-time. The loan must be repaid by the student to their school
Stafford Loans (FFELs and Direct Loans)
In addition to Perkins Loans, the U.S. Department of Education administers the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program and the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program. Both the FFEL and Direct Loan programs consist of what are generally known as Stafford Loans (for students) and PLUS Loans (for parents).
Stafford Loans are for undergraduate, graduate and professional students. You must be enrolled as at least a half-time student to be eligible for a Stafford Loan.
PLUS Loans (Parent Loans)
Parents can borrow a PLUS Loan to help pay the education expenses of their dependent undergraduate student who is enrolled at least half time in an eligible program at an eligible school. PLUS Loans are available through the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program and the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program.
Parents can get either loan, but not both during the same enrollment period. They also must have an acceptable credit history.
